Why the usual LPN salary numbers don't help you
National LPN salary averages are built from survey data that is a year old before it is published, and they blend staff wages with agency and per-diem rates. If you are deciding whether a shift this weekend is worth taking, an average from last year is the wrong tool. Every rate below is pulled from shifts posted right now in the AllShifts app across 121 city markets in 28 states, and it refreshes daily.
Posted per-diem LPN rates currently run from $26.24/hr to $52.00/hr. That spread is real money: the same license, on the same kind of unit, can earn a very different hourly rate one market over. Per-diem rates also move faster than staff wages because they reprice with local demand.

How per-diem LPN pay actually works on AllShifts

Do per-diem LPN shifts pay more than staff positions?
Often, yes. Per-diem rates reprice with demand, so in markets where facilities need coverage the posted hourly rate frequently beats the local staff wage for the same work. The tradeoff is that you build your own schedule instead of getting one assigned, which many LPNs consider the point.
Why do rates differ so much between cities?
Local supply and demand. Markets with fewer available LPNs and more open shifts post higher rates. A market 90 minutes away can pay several dollars more per hour, which is worth knowing before you book.
