What the jump is actually worth
Plenty of career pages tell CNAs that becoming an LPN pays more. Almost none of them show the number in your own city, measured honestly. So here it is from live postings: 73 cities currently have both CNA-family and LPN shifts posted on AllShifts, and we measured the jump the conservative way, comparing the BOTTOM of the LPN posted range against the TOP of the CNA range in the same city. Even measured against yourself on your best CNA day, the median jump is +$12.59 per hour.
| City | CNA posted range | LPN posted range | Jump (worst case) | Open slots (both) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lenox, MA | $23.18-$25.47/hr (CNA) | $46.14/hr | +$20.67/hr | 11 |
| Buzzards Bay, MA | $23.18-$25.47/hr (CNA) | $44.07-$48.06/hr | +$18.60/hr | 38 |
| Canton, ME | $23.80-$25.50/hr (CNA) | $42.50/hr | +$17.00/hr | 11 |
| Leeds, MA | $23.18-$25.47/hr (CNA) | $42.31-$46.14/hr | +$16.84/hr | 175 |
| North Falmouth, MA | $25.47/hr (CNA) | $42.31-$46.14/hr | +$16.84/hr | 13 |
| Milan, IL | $22.77/hr (CNA) | $38.61/hr | +$15.84/hr | 5 |
| Bowie, MD | $20.70/hr (GNA) | $35.88/hr | +$15.18/hr | 6 |

| Columbia, NJ | $24.00/hr (CNA) | $38.97/hr | +$14.97/hr | 2 |
Per shift, the medians say the same thing: an 8-hour shift at the median CNA market minimum grosses $182.16; the same 8 hours at the median LPN market minimum grosses $290.32. In Lenox, MA, today's widest same-city gap, the worst-case jump is +$20.67/hr before you even reach the top of the LPN range.
GNA (Maryland), LNA (New Hampshire), and STNA (Ohio) are state-specific names for the CNA-level certification and are counted with CNA above. LVN is the Texas/California name for LPN.
The path, without the fog
- You already hold the hardest-won asset: bedside experience. Practical nursing programs teach medication administration, assessments, and care planning on top of the patient-care foundation you use every shift. Many programs give admission weight to working CNAs; some employers and states also recognize CNA experience toward entry requirements.
- Practical nursing school typically runs about a year of full-time study, longer part-time. Program length, cost, and prerequisites vary by state and school, so compare accredited programs near you rather than trusting a national average.
- The license, not the diploma, changes your rate. You sit the NCLEX-PN after finishing an approved program; the pay jump in the table above arrives when your state license posts.
- Your CNA certification keeps earning the whole way through. That is the bridge part, and it is where scheduling control matters most.
How per-diem funds the school year
The usual reason CNAs stall on the LPN plan is the schedule collision: fixed staff shifts do not bend around lectures and clinical rotations. Per diem removes that collision. You pick shifts one at a time in the AllShifts app, so exam weeks can be light, breaks can be heavy, and clinical days are simply days you do not book.
- Book around the syllabus, not against it. There are 2,877 open CNA-family slots on AllShifts right now across 26 states; depth like that is what makes a pick-your-own schedule real rather than theoretical.
- Weekend and evening shifts keep income steady. The shifts that fit around a school day are the same ones facilities struggle to fill, so they are often the better-priced slots in a ranged market.
- Instant pay smooths the tuition months. AllShifts pays 100% of your net pay right after each verified shift, 7 days a week, which matters when fees are due mid-semester rather than on payday.
- No minimum-shift commitment means school comes first. A W-2 per-diem role with no quota lets you drop to one shift a week during finals without losing your place.

Common questions
Is the CNA-to-LPN jump the same everywhere?
No, and that is the point of the table above. Today's same-city jumps range from small to +$20.67/hr worst-case in Lenox, MA. Check your own market before assuming a national number.
Do I have to quit working while in LPN school?
Most students cannot afford to, and per-diem is built for exactly this: book CNA shifts around classes and clinicals, scale down at exam time, and scale back up on breaks. No quota, no fixed rotation.
Does AllShifts hire new LPN graduates?
AllShifts posts shifts for licensed LPNs across 26 states, with 2,074 open LPN slots right now. Download the app (iPhone / Android), upload your new license when it posts, and the shift list opens as soon as your credential file verifies.
Should I go straight for RN instead?
Some do; it is a longer, costlier program with a bigger ceiling. The bridge logic still applies: our RN pay guide shows what posted RN rates look like today, and LPN-to-RN bridge programs exist at many of the same schools, so the LPN license is a paying waypoint rather than a detour.
