Weekend and Holiday Boosted Shifts: How the Premium Really Works
Why hard-to-fill slots price at the top of a market's posted range, where the ceiling is biggest today, and how to work the boosted calendar deliberately, with live posted ranges from real markets.

Why weekends and holidays pay more
Facilities need the same coverage on Saturday night and Thanksgiving morning as they do on a Tuesday, but far fewer people volunteer for those hours. Staff schedules solve it with rotation and mandatory holidays. Per-diem solves it with price: the slots fewest people want get boosted until someone takes them. If your week already bends around school, a full-time job, or family, the shifts everyone else avoids may be the ones that fit your calendar best, and per-diem pays you a premium for taking them instead of forcing a rotation on you.
How boosts show up on AllShifts
- Holiday rates are boosted above the posted base. Working July 4th or Thanksgiving pays more than the same shift on an ordinary day, and the boost is visible on the shift card before you book.
- Hard-to-fill slots price at the top of the range. 149 of 312 live markets currently post a range rather than one flat rate. The top of a market's range belongs to the shifts that are hardest to fill: weekends, holidays, and last-minute coverage.
- The rate you see is the rate you get. No calling a recruiter to ask what the weekend differential is. The all-in hourly rate is on the card.
- Instant pay works 7 days a week. After a verified shift, 100% of your net pay is sent by direct deposit or Zelle, weekends and holidays included, with no fees. A Saturday shift pays you Sunday morning, not on the 15th.
Where the boost ceiling is biggest right now
These live markets have the widest gap between the bottom and top of their posted range, measured as a percentage of the market's own base. This is the honest, current measure of what taking the boosted slots is worth:
| City | Role | Posted range | Top over bottom | Open slots |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vineland, NJ | CNA | $19.50-$31.95/hr | +64% | 47 |
| Buzzards Bay, MA | LPN | $44.07-$72.09/hr | +64% | 40 |
| Buzzards Bay, MA | RN | $51.63-$83.43/hr | +62% | 31 |
| Gettysburg, PA | CNA | $20.70-$33.12/hr | +60% | 165 |
| Baldwinsville, NY | CNA | $26.80-$42.21/hr | +57% | 13 |
| Ithaca, NY | LPN | $39.33-$61.89/hr | +57% | 107 |
| Gettysburg, PA | RN | $48.30-$74.52/hr | +54% | 50 |
| Ithaca, NY | CNA | $22.77-$34.16/hr | +50% | 92 |
The arithmetic at today's widest spread: in Vineland, NJ, a 12-hour CNA shift at the top of the posted range grosses $383.40, versus $234.00 at the bottom of the same market's range. Choosing the boosted end is worth $149.40 per 12-hour shift right now, in the same city, on the same license.
Where a weekend-only rhythm actually works
A weekend-only or holidays-plus-weekends schedule needs depth: enough shifts on the calendar that the dates you can work are actually posted. These markets have the most shifts posted over the next 30 days:
| City | Role | Posted range | Shifts (30 days) | Open slots |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hollidaysburg, PA | CNA | $23.46-$24.84/hr | 134 | 247 |
| Gettysburg, PA | CNA | $20.70-$33.12/hr | 83 | 165 |
| Hollidaysburg, PA | LPN | $37.14-$38.64/hr | 71 | 114 |
| Ithaca, NY | CNA | $22.77-$34.16/hr | 60 | 92 |
| Knoxville, TN | CNA | $18.24-$22.08/hr | 59 | 112 |
| Buzzards Bay, MA | CNA | $23.18-$34.77/hr | 59 | 93 |
| Ithaca, NY | LPN | $39.33-$61.89/hr | 57 | 107 |
| Huntington, NY | CNA | $26.80-$28.14/hr | 53 | 83 |

Working the boosted calendar deliberately
- Volunteer for the holidays you do not mind. Every nurse has holidays they protect and holidays they do not care about. Booking the ones you do not care about at a boosted rate is the cheapest raise in per-diem work.
- Compare totals, not labels. If you are weighing a staff job's weekend differential against per-diem, add the staff base plus differential per hour and hold it against the posted all-in rate for the same night. The bigger number wins.
- Check the top of the range first. In a ranged market, ask which shifts carry the top rate before you fill your calendar with the bottom. The spread table above is worth real money per shift.
- Protect the rhythm. Weekend work compounds only if you can keep doing it. Block your recovery time like a shift; per-diem means nobody can schedule over it.
Common questions
Does every weekend shift pay more?
No. 163 of the 312 live markets currently post one flat rate across all their open shifts, and in ranged markets the boost lands on the specific slots that are hard to fill rather than on every Saturday. Check the number on the shift card, not an assumed rule.
Are holiday boosts automatic?
On AllShifts, holiday shifts are posted at boosted rates, and the rate on the card is what you are paid. You do not have to apply for the boost or claim it afterward.
Is boosted pay taxed differently?
No. Boosted pay is ordinary wages. What can change your take-home is your classification: our W-2 vs 1099 guide walks through that arithmetic at real posted rates.
How do I find the boosted shifts?
Download the AllShifts app (iPhone / Android), complete your free profile, and browse shifts near you. Every posting shows its real all-in rate up front, and there are 2,460 shifts posted across the next 30 days right now in 312 markets. Weekend and holiday dates are bookable the same way as any other shift.
What if my market posts a flat rate?
Then your lever is geography instead of timing. Compare the next city over on the full location list; the difference between neighboring markets is often larger than any single boost.
