A market and an open slot are different draws
On the shift board from September 26, 2026 at 10:15 UTC, 379 markets for RN, LPN, and CNA clear a $10/hr floor. GNA, LNA, and STNA are counted with CNA. LVN is counted with LPN. Together they hold 4,455 open slots. Each market has its own median hourly rate: the middle posted rate in that city and license. This page asks what happens when those medians are lined up in two ways.
Pick a market at random and the middle median is $34.50. That middle market is Baltimore, MD, LPN, with a posted low of $34.50, a median of $34.50, and a high of $35.88. Pick an open slot at random, give that slot its market's median, and the middle value is $24.83. The gap is $9.67 an hour. The lower figure is not a national average and it is not the high end of a range. It is the median attached to the middle open slot.
That middle open slot sits in Windham, NH, where the posted license is LNA. The low and the median there are both $24.83. The posted high is $26.27. 76 open slots sit in that market. One of them is the middle slot on this page. The high in that market is not the figure the median uses.
2,178 open slots (48.9%) sit in markets whose median is under $24.83. That is 111 markets. 2,201 open slots (49.4%) sit in markets whose median is over $24.83. That is 267 markets. One market, the one above, is exactly $24.83 and holds 76 open slots (1.7%). Most markets are on the high side of $24.83. The open slots are split almost evenly around it.
The same slots measured against the market median tell a different story. 2,911 open slots (65.3%) sit in markets whose median is under $34.50. 174 open slots (3.9%) sit in markets whose median is $34.50. 1,370 open slots (30.8%) sit above it. A person who reads only the market median will think the middle of this board is $34.50. Most open slots are in markets posted below that.
The typical-rate guide asks where a market's median sits between that market's own floor and high. The high-vs-typical guide asks how far the posted high sits from the median inside one market. This page asks which of those medians you meet if the draw is an open slot. Pay by city is on the RN, LPN, and CNA pages. Which license holds the slots is on the license guide.
18 other markets (CMA, CMT, NA, RMA, S-RN) hold 59 open slots and stay off the tables below. They are not part of the RN, LPN, and CNA total. Markets whose posted minimum or maximum is under $10/hr are left out before these counts.
Where the medians sit
Each market falls in one band by its own median hourly rate. The share is that band's open slots divided by the 4,455 RN, LPN, and CNA slots on this page. Shares are rounded to one decimal. The $24.83 slot median falls in the $20 to under $25 band. The $34.50 market median falls in the $30 to under $40 band.
| Market median | Markets | Open slots | Share of slots |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under $20 | 10 | 68 | 1.5% |
| $20 to under $25 | 110 | 2,296 | 51.5% |
| $25 to under $30 | 57 | 436 | 9.8% |
| $30 to under $40 | 103 | 987 | 22.2% |
| $40 or more | 99 | 668 | 15.0% |
The $20 to under $25 band is 110 markets and 2,296 open slots (51.5%). Every market in that band, and every market under $20, is in the CNA group. The $40 or more band is 99 markets and 668 open slots (15.0%). No CNA market is in that band. A band can hold many markets and still hold a smaller share of the open slots.
The same split, by license
GNA, LNA, and STNA are in the CNA row. LVN is in the LPN row. The market median is the middle market when that row is ordered by median rate. When the count is even, it is the average of the two middle markets. The slot median gives each open slot that market's median, then takes the middle. The LPN market median displays as $37.88 because the two middle LPN markets post $37.80 and $37.95. That $37.88 figure is the average. It is not itself a posted rate.
| License | Markets | Market median | Slot median | Open slots | Share of slots |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| RN | 71 | $48.30 | $48.64 | 489 | 11.0% |
| LPN / LVN | 132 | $37.88 | $37.50 | 1,172 | 26.3% |
| CNA / GNA / LNA / STNA | 176 | $23.46 | $22.77 | 2,794 | 62.7% |
RN is the only row where the slot median is above the market median: $48.64 against $48.30. The RN market median is Palisade, CO, at $48.30 across 5 open slots. The RN slot median is Mabel, MN, at a flat $48.64 across 4 open slots. LPN's slot median is $37.50, in Altoona, PA, a flat rate across 100 open slots. CNA's slot median is $22.77, in Ithaca, NY. The low and the median there are both $22.77. The posted high is $34.16. CNA holds 2,794 of the 4,455 open slots (62.7%), which is why the page slot median sits near the CNA row and not near the market median of $34.50.
Eight markets with the most open slots
These eight markets hold the most open slots. Low, median, and high are hourly rates posted in that market. Several of the largest CNA markets post a median in the low $20s, which is what pulls the slot median below the market median. Read the median before treating the high as the typical rate. Eatontown and Gettysburg post a high of $33.12 and a median of $20.70.
| City | License | Low | Median | High | Open slots |

| Eatontown, NJ | CNA | $20.70 | $20.70 | $33.12 | 180 |
| Gettysburg, PA | CNA | $20.70 | $20.70 | $33.12 | 145 |

Each city links to its live market page. Markets whose posted minimum or maximum is under $10/hr are left out. That filter removes placeholder rates. No workplace is named.
How to read the two medians
- The market median counts each city and license once. On this board that middle value is $34.50.
- The slot median counts each open slot once. On this board that middle value is $24.83, and 65.3% of open slots sit in markets below $34.50.
- CNA holds the volume. 62.7% of the open slots are in the CNA group, whose slot median is $22.77.
- A high is not the median. The market that holds the page's middle open slot posts a high of $26.27 and a median of $24.83.
Common questions
Does $24.83 mean every open slot pays that?
No. $24.83 is the median of the market medians when each open slot is counted once. 2,178 open slots are in markets posted under that, and 2,201 are in markets posted over it. The market that contains the middle slot also posts a high of $26.27. Open the city page, or the app, for the rate on a single shift.
Why is the market median higher?
267 of 379 markets post a median over $24.83, so the middle market lands at $34.50. Those higher markets hold fewer open slots. The $20 to under $25 band is 110 markets and 51.5% of the open slots. The $40 or more band is 99 markets and 15.0% of the open slots.
How do I see the rate on a shift?
Download the AllShifts app (iPhone / Android), add your license and credentials, and the app shows the shifts your file qualifies for, with the hourly rate on the shift before you claim it. Pay is W-2. The W-2 vs 1099 guide covers why that status matters.
Pay figures on this page come from shifts currently posted in the AllShifts app and change daily. AllShifts is an equal opportunity employer.
