Shifts per workplace is the list, not the openings

On the shift board from September 26, 2026 at 10:15 UTC, 379 markets for RN, LPN, and CNA clear a $10/hr floor. GNA, LNA, and STNA are counted with CNA. LVN is counted with LPN. Together they hold 4,455 open slots across 3,145 distinct shifts at 421 workplaces. Shifts per workplace is the distinct-shift count divided by the workplace count. It is not the open-slot count. One shift can carry more than one opening. A higher ratio means those workplaces list more distinct shifts. It does not mean the market has more workplaces.

The median is 3 shifts per workplace for the page, and it is also 3 for RN, for LPN, and for CNA. The median is the middle market when the markets are ordered by this ratio. When the count is even, it is the average of the two middle markets. A median of 3 does not mean a typical open slot sits in a 3-shift list. Slot counts and market counts tell different stories on this page.

103 markets list exactly 1 shift per workplace. They hold 120 open slots (2.7%) across 106 shifts and 106 workplaces. That is more markets than the 5-to-under-10 band, and it is one of the smallest shares of open slots. Those 120 openings sit on 106 shifts, so some of those single-shift markets carry more than one opening. The openings-per-shift guide covers that split.

125 markets list over 1 and under 5 shifts per workplace. That is the most common shape. They hold 487 open slots (10.9%). Two of those 125 markets are over 1 and under 2. The other 123 are at least 2 and under 5. The most common shape is not the shape that holds the most open slots.

21 markets list 25 or more shifts per workplace. They hold 1,738 open slots (39.0%) across 1,067 shifts at 24 workplaces. That is the band with the most open slots. It is 21 markets and 24 workplaces, so the long lists are not a long list of workplaces. CNA holds 1,320 of those 1,738 open slots (75.9%). The openings-per-workplace guide divides open slots by workplaces. The one-workplace guide counts the workplaces. Pay by city is on the RN, LPN, and CNA pages.

18 other markets (CMA, CMT, NA, RMA, S-RN) hold 59 open slots and stay off the tables below. They are not part of the RN, LPN, and CNA total. Markets whose posted minimum or maximum is under $10/hr are left out before these counts.

Shifts per workplace, by band

Each market falls in one band. The share is that band's open slots divided by the 4,455 RN, LPN, and CNA slots on this page. Shares are rounded to one decimal. The band with the most markets and the band with the most open slots are not the same.

Eight longest shift lists

These are the eight markets with the most shifts per workplace. The ratio is distinct shifts divided by workplaces. Low, median, and high are hourly rates on shifts posted in that market. A long list at one workplace can still post a narrow hourly range. Read the median before treating the high as the typical rate.

The same split, by license

GNA, LNA, and STNA are in the CNA row. LVN is in the LPN row. The median uses every market in that row. Exactly 1 and 25 or more are counts of markets, then the open slots in those markets.

How to read the ratio

Common questions

Does a high ratio mean the city has many workplaces?

No. The ratio is the distinct-shift count divided by the workplace count. The longest list on this page is 83 shifts at 1 workplace. The 25-or-more band is 21 markets and 24 workplaces. The one-workplace guide is the page that counts workplaces.

How is this different from openings per workplace?

Openings per workplace divides open slots by workplaces. This page divides distinct shifts by workplaces. A market can list one shift and still have several openings on it. The exactly-1 band here is 106 shifts and 120 open slots. The openings-per-shift guide divides slots by shifts.

How do I see the shifts?

Download the AllShifts app (iPhone / Android), add your license and credentials, and the app shows the shifts your file qualifies for, with the hourly rate on the shift before you claim it. Pay is W-2. The W-2 vs 1099 guide covers why that status matters.
